HANDMADE BURGER CO RESTAURANT SET TO OPEN AT DURHAM’S THE RIVERWALK

Family-run restaurant Handmade Burger Co has confirmed it will be opening a new restaurant in Durham at The Riverwalk (formerly The Gates). The growing chain will begin trading at the redeveloped centre, which is owned by a fund managed by Clearbell Capital, on completion in Summer 2018. The news follows the announcement in March that ODEON Cinemas “Odeon” will be opening a six-screen cinema at The Riverwalk.

The popular burger company is known for using only the freshest and finest ingredients and makes more than 40 varieties of burgers from scratch in each of its restaurant every day. The Riverwalk restaurant will be its fourth in the North East – it currently has restaurants in the Metrocentre, Gateshead and The Gate in Newcastle, and is set to open a further Newcastle restaurant later this year at intu Eldon Square.

Working alongside the development team, The Other Retail Group is providing asset management and development advice for The Riverwalk. The shopping centre will include a variety of restaurants, 23 refurbished shops and improved entrances and public realm areas, helping to enhance the area’s amenities both during the day and at night-time. As part of the development, 253 student rooms will also be built.

Since opening its first family-run restaurant in 2006 at Brindleyplace in Birmingham, the burger chain has continued to grow and now has 25 restaurants across the UK with plans to open more in 2017 and 2018.

Shoppers are still able to access designated areas of The Riverwalk while construction takes place.

The £30m redevelopment of The Riverwalk includes 35,000 sq ft of new restaurants, 23 refurbished retail units, 253 student accommodation rooms, and a six-screen Odeon cinema.

The enhanced shopping centre will improve access to the city centre by linking all retail and leisure offerings at the scheme and creating a synergy with the shopping streets around the World Heritage Site, the Market Square, and Freeman’s Quay.
